La venganza de don Mendo, obra teatral de Pedro Muñoz Seca, fue estrenada en el Teatro de la Comedia de Madrid en 1918. Su éxito ha sido tan grande que hoy en día es una de las obras más representada de todos los tiempos en España junto con Don Juan Tenorio y La vida es sueño. Formalmente es un exquisito recorrido por casi todos los metros y formas estróficas de la poesía castellana. Pero, por encima de todo, es una soberbia obra de humor que se ríe de los clásicos a base de atinados juegos de palabras y golpes de humor a cargo de unos personajes tan trágicos como divertidos. La obra pertenece al género, creado por el autor, del astracán. El astracán es un género cómico que pretende hacer reír a toda costa: las situaciones, los personajes, si hace falta, el anacronismo, el retruécano y hasta la deformación cómica del lenguaje.
Magdalena, hija de don Nuño Manso de Jarama, mantiene relaciones a escondidas con don Mendo. Don Nuño decide casarla con un rico privado del rey, Don Pero de Toro. Ella, que ve mejor partido en Don Pero que en Don Mendo, acepta entusiasmada. Cuando son descubiertos los amantes por Don Pero, Don Mendo, para salvar el honor de ella, se autoinculpa de un robo que no cometió. Por ello es encarcelado y condenado a muerte, y emparedado, por capricho de Magdalena. Magdalena y Don Pero se casan. Don Mendo descubre, entonces, la traición de Magdalena. Cuando todo parece perdido, su amigo el marqués de Moncada, lo rescata de la torre, donde todos piensan que ha quedado emparedado, dándole así la oportunidad de llevar a cabo su venganza bajo la identidad del apuesto Renato, un trovador que a todas enloquece.
