Lecrin Valley: the valley of happiness

Nestled in the mountainous region of La Alpujarra, just a stone’s throw away from the Costa Tropical, lies a haven of tranquility known as the Buddhist Retreat Centre Osel Ling. More than just a retreat, it’s a sanctuary where visitors can escape the noise of everyday life and reconnect with their inner selves. Situated amidst the majestic Sierra Nevada National Park at an altitude of 1600 meters, O Sel Ling offers a serene setting surrounded by breathtaking mountains and valleys, making it the perfect place for introspection and peace.

A Place of Clear Light

Founded in 1980 by Lamas Yeshe and Zopa Rimponché, the centre was graced by a visit from the Dalai Lama himself in 1982, who bestowed upon it the name “O Sel Ling,” meaning “place of clear light.” Rooted in ancient Tibetan Buddhist tradition, O Sel Ling serves as a refuge for those seeking inner peace and spiritual connection. It gained worldwide recognition in 1985 when Osel Hita Torres, born in nearby Bubión, was recognized as the reincarnation of Lama Yeshe. Today, it continues to uphold its mission of providing solace and spiritual guidance to all who seek it.

Charming Villages

The valley is dotted with picturesque villages like Nigüelas, Dúrcal, and Restábal, each offering its own unique charm. These villages are characterized by their narrow, winding streets, hidden plazas, and traditional eateries where visitors can enjoy local delicacies. Walking through these villages, you’ll discover the authentic lifestyle of the Andalusian countryside, with friendly locals and a relaxed pace of life.

Outdoor Adventures

For those who love the outdoors, the Lecrín Valley offers plenty of activities. The surrounding mountains provide a stunning backdrop for hiking and nature walks. Trails of varying difficulty levels allow hikers to explore the natural beauty of the area while enjoying panoramic views. Birdwatching is another popular activity, thanks to the valley’s numerous waterways and rich biodiversity. Picnicking by the Béznar reservoir is a perfect way to spend a leisurely afternoon, surrounded by nature.

Natural Beauty and Cultural Richness

The Lecrín Valley beautifully combines natural beauty and cultural richness. The landscape is dominated by lush citrus groves and olive trees, creating a green and fertile environment. The traditional architecture and historical sites within the villages reflect the rich cultural heritage of the region. This blend of nature and culture makes the Lecrín Valley a unique and appealing destination.

Getting to the Lecrín Valley from Granada and the Costa Tropical is very straightforward as it juts off the highway A-44 that connects Granada with the Costa Tropical
